How photographers can stop clients downloading without paying

Updated 29 June 2026 · 5 min read

To stop clients downloading your photos without paying, never hand over the full-resolution files on trust. Send a watermarked gallery they can review and approve, and release the clean, high-res images only when their payment clears, on a single link, money straight to your Stripe. Here's how to set that up and why it works.

The right-click problem

You send a gallery so the client can pick their favourites, and they quietly right-click-save the lot and go quiet on the invoice. Or they "just need a couple for socials now" and the rest never gets paid for. Every photographer has had it happen. Once the full-resolution files are out, your leverage is gone.

The fix isn't chasing harder. It's not handing over usable files until you've been paid, while still letting the client see the work to choose and approve it.

Send a watermarked gallery

Deliver the shoot as watermarked previews instead of clean files. The client can see every image, zoom in, pick their selects, and sign off, but the watermark makes the previews useless as a final product:

  • Tile the mark across the whole frame so it can't be cropped out without cropping the photo itself. A single corner logo looks cleaner but is easier to crop, so pick based on how much you trust the client.
  • Use your name or studio mark so the proofs double as quiet promotion if they get shared around.

That's exactly what watermarking does, on images and video, before anything leaves your hands.

Release full-res on payment

The watermarked preview is only half of it. The other half is making payment the thing that releases the clean files. Send the shoot as a payment-gated transfer: the client reviews the watermarked gallery, pays through your own Stripe on the same link, and the full-resolution images unlock the moment it clears.

That's getting paid before you deliver (see also paid file delivery). There's no invoice to chase, because the download and the payment are the same action, and there's nothing to claw back, because the only thing the client ever had was a watermarked preview.

Deposits still matter

Gating the final delivery handles the back end. Don't drop the front end: a deposit before the shoot (or before the edit) filters out the clients who were never going to pay and covers your time if a booking falls through. Deposit up front, watermarked proofs to choose from, clean files released on final payment. That closes the loop at both ends.

FAQ

Can clients just screenshot or right-click-save my watermarked previews?

They can save the preview, but it's watermarked, so it's no use as a final. A tiled watermark across the whole frame can't be cropped out without cropping the photo too. The clean, full-resolution file is the thing they can't get until they pay.

How do I deliver a gallery but only release the high-res once they pay?

Send the shoot as a payment-gated transfer. The client sees watermarked previews to approve the selection, pays through your own Stripe, and the full-resolution files unlock the instant payment clears. No separate gallery software needed.

Should I watermark client proofs?

For anything that's not yet paid for, yes. A clear watermark lets the client see and choose images without handing them a usable final. Once they've paid, you release the clean versions. It's the simplest protection against the proofs being used for free.

Do I need expensive gallery software for this?

No. A payment-gated transfer covers the core of it, watermarked previews in, clean files out on payment, on a single link. You can use it on its own or alongside a gallery tool for proofing.

Deliver the gallery, keep the files until you're paid.

Watermarked previews to approve, full-resolution images released on payment. No right-click-save, no invoice chase.
