WeTransfer's free plan lets you send up to 3 GB per transfer, with a cap of 10 transfers in any rolling 30 days. Download links expire after 3 days. Password protection is included. Here's what those numbers mean in practice, what the paid tiers actually get you, and what to do when the free plan stops being enough.

The free limits

WeTransfer's free plan comes down to three numbers, and it pays to understand each one before it bites you mid-deadline:

• 3 GB per transfer. That's the total size of everything in one send, not per file. A single graded 4K clip or a folder of RAW photos clears 3 GB without trying.
• 10 transfers per rolling 30 days. Note the word rolling. It's not a counter that resets on the 1st of the month. Each transfer stops counting against you exactly 30 days after you sent it, which makes the moment you get unblocked genuinely hard to predict.
• 3-day expiry. Your recipient has 72 hours to grab the files. Miss the window and the link is dead.

On the plus side, free transfers can be password protected, which is more than some free tiers offer. But the three caps above are where most people hit the wall.

What happens when you hit the cap

When transfer number 11 lands inside the rolling window, WeTransfer blocks the upload and shows you the upgrade screen. Your options at that point:

• Wait. A slot frees up when your oldest transfer in the window turns 30 days old. Fine for casual use, useless when a client is waiting.
• Pay. Starter or Ultimate, more on those below.
• Move. Use a service with bigger free limits for this send, or permanently.

The sneaky one is the 3-day expiry, because it compounds the transfer cap. Client on holiday, recipient buried in email, link quietly dies, and now the re-send burns a second transfer from your 10 for the exact same files. People routinely spend two or three of their monthly transfers delivering one project.

The 3 GB ceiling has no workaround at all. Splitting a folder across multiple sends eats your transfer count faster, and a single file over 3 GB simply won't go.

WeTransfer pricing, explained

WeTransfer currently sells two paid plans:

• Starter, around $6.99/month. The entry tier for people who mainly need to get past the free caps.
• Ultimate, around $25/month. 200 GB per transfer, 1 TB of storage, and download links that can last up to 30 days.

If you came here searching for WeTransfer Pro, you're not imagining things, it did exist. After Bending Spoons acquired WeTransfer, the plans were renamed and restructured, and Pro disappeared as a plan name. Plenty of people still search for it and end up confused on the pricing page. The short version: anyone who would have bought Pro is now choosing between Starter and Ultimate.

One more thing worth knowing when you're deciding who holds your files. In July 2025, WeTransfer added clauses to its terms of service covering the use of uploaded content for AI training, faced a public backlash, and subsequently walked the language back. No dramatics needed, it was corrected, but it's a reasonable thing to weigh alongside the price.
